Creation & Origins

Catholic teaching on creation, evolution, young earth creationism, and the proper interpretation of Genesis.

1What is the Church's position on evolution?

The Church allows discussion of biological evolution concerning the human body, provided that the direct creation of the soul by God is affirmed (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36). The soul cannot evolve from matter; it is spiritual and created immediately by God.

Scripture affirms that all things were created by divine command (Gen 1–2). Theistic evolution is acceptable only when it does not deny Adam, Eve, original sin, or divine causality. Materialistic evolutionism, which excludes God's purpose and treats man as accidental, is incompatible with Catholic faith.

Science and faith are not enemies, but science must recognize its limits. The origin of life is not a laboratory question but a metaphysical one. Creation is an act of divine will, not the product of blind chance.
